JENNENS, Eric
JENNENS, Eric Gordon Born January 11, 1923, passed away peacefully at Hospice on March 13, 2010, after a courageous struggle with cancer. Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Sylvia, of 63 years, his daughters Julie (Colin Cruickshank), Susan (Tom McLean) and sons, Rick (Rosanne) and Terry. Also remembering their grandfather are Tanya and Seung Chul Jennens, Aileen and Noreen Cruickshank and Jenny (Jon Adrian) and Scott McLean. Gordon was born and raised in Kelowna and at a very young age developed a fascination with airplanes. At age 16 he enrolled in a wartime course in California and in 1941 graduated as an aeronautical engineer. He then joined Boeing’s Sea Island operation near Vancouver, building mainly PBY’s, a plane used by nearly every branch of the military. In 1945 he joined the RCAF as a flight engineer and later transferred to the British Fleet Air Arm to go overseas. While there, he met his bride, Sylvia. After the war, he returned to Kelowna and began building rowing shells, including those used by the 1952 Canadian Olympic rowing team in Helsinki. With the help of his wife and 4 children, he built an authentic 60-foot replica Viking Ship which toured the US and Canada before sailing the fjords of Norway in the summer of 1971. A few years later, Gordon took on the formidable task of building a submersible "weed machine" to help rid local lakes of milfoil. Always the creative problem-solver and inventor, Gordon even developed a design for an underwater floating tunnel across Okanagan Lake. The family gratefully acknowledges the support of friends over the years especially Ray and Ann Bostock. Also special thanks to the staff at Hospice House and Dick Scott. We will all remember Gordon for his cheerful outlook on life and strong sense of family. We’ll all miss the great gift of his pioneering spirit. He’s ready to fly. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice or charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com, 250-860-7077.
